Officers arrested a 22-year-old man from Vlissingen on Wednesday for bank help desk fraud, the police reported on Thursday.

Bank help desk fraud (also known as spoofing) is a type of fraud where scammers call from an existing bank phone number. Then they pretend to be a bank employee and then steal money from people.

The victim and his wife were contacted by telephone in August by a woman posing as an employee of their bank. She said that someone had tried to withdraw money from their bank account. Their bank card would have become ‘infected’ as a result and had to be exchanged for a new one.

After a so-called colleague of the woman had collected the bank card at the door of the victims, more than 19,000 euros was withdrawn from their account.

The police were able to arrest the man from Vlissingen after a large-scale investigation. He is suspected of fraud and theft. It is not known whether the woman who called the couple is now also in the picture with the police.
